Cannot start database

I've just installed Oracle 8i on Solaris 8. When trying to create a database using the database configuration assistant, it fails to start the database and then stops - see below.

SVRMGR> connect internal
Connected.
SVRMGR> startup nomount pfile = "/export/home/oracle/OraHome1/admin/pf/pfile/initpf.ora"
ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
SVRMGR>

What does this error mean? Any advice greatly appreciated.

ORA-3113 means the client lost contact with the server process. Most probably because the server process crashed.
This is almost always an Oracle bug.
