Cannot slice in Illustrator CS3

when i try to slice up an image in CS3 i get a circle with a slash through it (kind of like the circle with slash for cigarettes, symbolizing no smoking).
When i got to object>Slice, all i can click on is Create from guides or Clip to art board, all other options are grayed out. Thank you
