I have recently moved my Exchange server from my DC to a member server (See posting Removal of Exchange posting).

I can send mail to all receipients, however any AOL clients do not receive mail. We receive mail *from* them but when we send mail to them all we get is the tracking system telling us that the mail has arrived. It seems that they get lost in the AOL ether.

After some research on the subject i tried changing the FQDN that was sent by my new server to the old one that would have been sent out, to no avail. I have checked the headers in the messages and the IP address is the same.

I have tried pinging both smtp.mail.aol.com and imap.mail.aol.com, and both get resolved into IP addresses, and I have put external DNS addresses into the advanced section of the SMTP virtual server.

Although we do not have many clients that have AOL accounts it would be nice to get it sorted :)

I am out of ideas, so if anyone can help it would be much appreciated

Cheers

AOL has been usally lack in this area but have you:

1. Set up a reverse DNS zone
2. Checked for any open relays

Would I set up the Reverse DNS on my Domain Controller??

I don't think I have checked for any open relays, but I can do that

i will let you know how I get on

Cheers

Try telneting to one of their mail servers and see if your ip address is blocked.

telnet mailin-04.mx.aol.com port 25

Ok, thanks for that

I telneted in and it let me in, but I wasn't sure where to go from there, if anywhere!

Cheers

If you are using Symantec Filtering for Exchange, check your filtering policy to see if the policy was set to block AOL email. I know by default, the policy block aol, yahoo, hotmail and other freebees. Goodluck.

If AOL can't resolve your domain name this happens. If your internal domain is different from your external one (yourdomain.local used inside but your e-mail addresses are all user@yourdomain.com) this behavior will be seen unless the primary smtp address on each user is set to to use the external address.
