I have an SMTP program that runs on the Exchange Server 2003. This program is used to send intranet and internet e-mails. When I use the Exchange Server as the SMTP server I receive the following SMTP error reponse:

Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for XXX@XXXX', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

When I run Outlook Express I receive the same type of errors.

If I have the SMTP program point (relay) to an SMTP server running on a Unix server the intranet and internet e-mails work fine.

Is there some Exchange server default setting I need to change?

Thanks,
Mark

Yep. Exchange, by default, doesn't allow relaying as an effort to reduce spam.

In ESM, right click the Default SMTP Virtual Server and go to Properties. Go to the Access tab and click on the RELAY button. You can enter info there about what machines should be allowed to relay through it. Use this sparingly.

I added the server to the list of relay machines. I entered the intranet and the internet IP addresses. I stopped/started the SMTP server. I still cannot sent an e-mail through the ESM when the e-mail originates from the ESM.

I was able to send internet and intranet e-mails from the ESM by TELNET'ing to port 25 and using some SMTP commands.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Mark
