When I go to "change user type" I cannot select "Roaming". It is greyed out. I am logged in as administrator. I is there something else I need to do to enable that function?
You didn't say whether or not you were networked to anything else and whether or not you have configured active directory. Roaming profiles have to be enabled in active directory and AD won't be available unless you are networked to at least one other machine.
Sorry the is a lot that one likes to assume. That is a "yes" to all the questions. The thing I can't seem to find is that "enable roaming profile" in AD. I've read several MSKB articles on the subject but they don't seem to mention it. Only putting in the path which I have don. Can you tell me were it is or why I can't see ti it?
if you have all that set up, go to AD Users and Computers utility and hit the profiles tab. If set up, this will show you the path to YOUR profile. If you want it roaming, you have to configure it showing the local path to where its stored and where you want it connected to.
Also, you may want to look up your ntuser.dat, ntuser.dat.log and ntuser.ini files.
Use Google.
Once you put in the path like \\server\profile\usera make sure the folder exsist and has the right permissions to access it. After that the user should be able to login with a "roaming profile
That worked but now I'm getting "Access to the [users directory] denied" messeges when I log in as the user. I added the test user to the Administrators group but I still get the message. Any ideas?
It most likly the permissions on the share/profile folder on the server is not set to correctly allow them access. Check and make sure you have the right permissions there.
Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu that appears.
Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under User Profiles.
In the Profiles stored on this computer list, click the profile that you want.
To change the type of profile, click Change Type, click Roaming profile, and then click OK.
