Hi,

We have a Win2k server with Exchange2k on it on one box and MS SQL server on an other box. On the box with MS SQL running on it we have installed Veritas Backup Exec 8.5. I have installed the necessary keys to use the exchange agent but I can only see the Exchange Mailboxes. I can't see the Information store or Exchange Directories.
I've installed the Remote Backup Agent on the Exchange box and the Open File agent too. After some searching I also found something about copying a DLL-file (can't remember which one) from the exchange server to the backup server and then after rebooting it would solve the problem.... Guess what, it didn't :(.
I also tried to install the management tools from exchange 2k on the backup server and applied the neccesarry service pack on it so it is the same as on the exchange machine.
Still doesn't work.
Any suggestions are welcome! Need to add here that both servers are on the same domain.

May be as simple as :

Within the BE console > help > about > does the Exchange agent desription specifically say that its for Exchange 2000 ? If it doesnt the Licence that you have for exchange is only valid for Exchange 5.5.

If you are unsure, start the setup routine on the media server > remove your Licence numbers (make note of them first or copy the BESNNUM.TXT (Winnt directory) to somewhere (contains your licence no's)> make sure that nothing is marked for install on the options screen and follow the setup routine all the way through. This will put BE back into Eval (no info. will be lost ie. media sets , scheduled jobs). If you can see the IS, you know the reason and can leave it running in Eval until you get the licence sorted out.

The file you mentioned is probably the ESEBCLI2.DLL

Note !! You will not see a directory store in backup selctions for Exchange 2000, you wil only see "Microsoft Information Store" and " Microsoft Exchange mailboxes". You would see a third icon (Microsoft Directory Store) only if its Exchange 5.5 you want to backup via the agent.

If that doesnt work and its not a licenceing issue, apply the same Exchange SP that you have runnning to the media server, rather than copying the ESEBCLI2.dll across

Hope this helps

Indeed, it's as easy as....

I was always looking too far I guess. Going into help and about I saw that the serial key said "Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server" I hoped it would be the same for exchange 5.5 and for exchange 2k since both are MAPI compliant.
Thx for your help Dog,

i do have exchange 2000 license and did have it working before we had to recreate the first storage group again and now all i see is the mailboxes.

i went through all tech notes on anonymous restrict and reinstalling agent and BE on the media server but nothing..

any other ideas ?
thanks

- Do you have the Exchange System manager tools installed on the Media server > if not, its a requirement > If they are installed > also apply the same exchange SP to the media server or copy the ESEBCLI2.DLL from the exchange server and overwrite the same file on the media Server (stop Backup exec services first though)> SP'ing is a slightly better option though

We are having a similar issue. Apparently we are using an old Exchange 5.5 only license "Exchange Agent 8.0" and we need to purchase the 8.6 version to be compatible with Exchange 2000.

We are running a license for Backup Exec Server 8.0 that you can upgrade to BE 8.5 for free. Only BE 8.5 and higher are compatible with Exchange 2000.

I know the licensing scheme is kind of confusing, but that’s the best way I can describe it. Good Luck.
