I appreciate this has been answered many times, so please either redirect me or let me know the solution...

I have a windows 2000 server with AD, my clients are xp pro and windows 2000.

When I first install a new machine, you can see all the computers on the network. one machine I did on Monday can no longer do this...it just shows up blank.

On the Windows 2000 machines (Not all) it just says network is not accessable?? all the shared printers / files are working and everyone is logging to the domain with no problems, I cant understand why this happens on clients for no reason,

We are using dhcp. Is it WINS? I dont have much experience with WINS (Apart from what it stands for!)

Would appreciate this,

Thanks Guys

Hi.

I´d try installing IPX/SPX on all machines.
Helps a lot on workgroups!
Works for domains too.

Let me know if it helped.
(You could try it on one client first. Should have impact immediately)

Cheers
Damien

Im not on a workgroup, im on a domain..How would this help? Ive never used IPX/SPX thats for Novell Networks?

This has only happened slowly over 12 months.

Thanks

well, it may not be the best solution for this problem, but it does work, eaven on domains. (don´t know why though)
Just try it out on one of your clients.
You´ll see the result immediately.

Damien

I tried, but no good, sorry...I did an XP Pro client and a windows 2000 client....

Does your DNS work properly?
Have you tried "nslookup"?
What kind of network components do you use and how are they configured?
Clients -> Duplex settings/Link speed
Server -> Duplex settings/Link speed
Switch/Hub -> Duplex settings/Link speed

I hope I am helping you here...

Damien

with nslookup it says :

*** Can't find server name for address 10.10.10.3: Non-existent domain
*** Default servers are not available
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: 10.10.10.3

>

????

My server has a name? i can do a search for it, and it pops up?

That´s because your reverse lookup zone is not configured.
To do so, go to the DNS manager on your DC.
right click reverse zones and choose new zone...
you will see how to get through the setup no problem.
After that, I would go to a cdm shell and type "ipconfig /flushdns" and after that I would execute the command "ipconfig /registerdns".

Try that and see what happens.

For more options on "nslookup" type "nslookup /?"
just a hint.
You can also type the nslookup command followed by a hostname you are trying to reach.
Let me know how you are doing.

Damien

You`ll have to explain reverse lookup zones for me? as i dont understand and dont want to mess up the server..

I do appreciate your help, (you could probably help with a previous post i just replied to below this)

Thanks

I would try installing IPX/SPX on the server and one client, just to make sure. I am pretty sure it will work better afterwards.

I am sorry I can´t explain in deep detail, because I´m at work right now.
This link should help you understand DNS.

You need a forward zone to reach computers via hostname (computer name).
It just "translates" hostnames to IP addresses.
You need a reverse zone to do the same thing the other way. IP address to hostname.
If DNS is configured properly, you shouldn´t have to bother about these things, bacause all that happens in the background transparent to the user.

Excuse my english, I´m from germany...

Damien

Nope, still no luck......

Im totally lost now, I didnt know how to configure the reverse look up zone, it was asking for an IP address, but only had 3 octets?

Thanks

I added 3.10.10 for the server, but nothing....

Im sure the problem is something else, please can someone help?

I dont understand why its stopped working, Its really doing my swede in....

DNS Forward Lookup Zones resolve Domain names to IP addresses.

DNS Reverse Lookup Zones resolve IP addresses to Domain names (host names.

The FQDN for reverse zone for a class A should be

0.0.0.10.in-addr.arpa

Unless you are using a class C subnetmask of 255.255.255.0

After you created the reverse lookup zone did you open it to see if there were any PTR entries in it? If there are none you can go to your forward lookup zone and open the properties for one of the host (A) records and check the box to update the the associated pointer (PTR) record. Now see if you can see the computer whose PTR record you updated. It might take about 30 minutes.

What happens if you try to ping one of the Server by there DNS name?

Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP checked on the WINS tab in the Advanced TCP/IP properties?

On the server that is running the DNS service run ipconfig /all and post that output here. I'll check back and see if I can see anything. Please include the output from one of the workstations that is have issues as well.

I can ping the server from any desktop by IP Address and server name.

and i can do the same from the server, the server can see all the desktops in my network places.. but the workstations can.

Here is the ipconfig /all from the server...

Not quite sure why, but it seems the server has 2 IP Address`s?

10.10.10.3 and 10.10.10.61...

Any advice on this would be great thanks,

JAMES

Something has really gone wrong....

I can use cmd fuctions now!

If I do an nslookup from the server or desktops I get:

"cant find server name for 10.10.10.3" non existant domain"

Then if I do an IPCONFIG /ALL I get:

"Non authoritative answer"

"unrecognised command"

All this started when I put the reverse lookup zone in...

everthing else is fine, people can log on, the scripts all run, domain shares are available...

Please can someone help....

Why does the server have 2 IP address`s I only gave it 1?

Appears you have 2 network cards in your server. You also have IP Routing Enabled. Do you need this enabled? Who setup the network here? You need to talk with the Network Admin that setup this network. First though some thoughts and some questions:

* First of all, the suggestion that you need to add the IPX/SPX protocol is ridiculous. That is worst thing you can do for a TCP/IP environment *
(1) Any reason why you have IP Routing enabled? Any reason why you need a 2nd NIC active on the server?
(2)I would disable the 2nd Network Card. The reason why you cannot see all the computers from your workstations is because browsing is broke. Browsing cannot work if a Master Browser has multiple NICS. To disable the 2nd NIC go to device manager (Via Control Panel, System, hardware, device manager). Browse to the Network Adapters section and disable the card. Just make sure you have disabled the correct one. You want the 10.10.10.3 card to be enabled.
(3) Now check the TCP/IP DNS Settings for the 10.10.10.3 server. You need to make sure the server is pointing to itself like this:
DNS Server Addresses window. Make sure 10.10.10.3
is set

Append Primary and connection specific DNS suffixes
and "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS
suffix. These need to be checked

DNS suffix for this connection. Would not hurt to
enter "icpsolar.icpsolar.co.uk"

Register this connection's addresses in DNS also
needs to be checked.

(4) Do Step 3 for all servers that you have

(5) Just to recap. First find out why IP Routing is enabled and if someone from your Admin team set the server up this way.
(6) After all steps are done see if Browsing is working by logging onto workstations and viewing entire network.
(7) Try the NSLOOKUP now. If it still fails you need to review your entry for the Reverse Lookup Zone. If you need assistance I can review my Reverse Lookup Zone and go from there.

good luck.

* If you still cannot view. You may need to install WINS if you do not have a Wins Server installed.

Let me know how you make out.

I dont have a 2nd NIC, never have done, I set up the Network myself!!

It was all quite easy to start, now these little problems are arising.

Thankyou for the above response, I do have wins installed already.

Not sure why it thinks my server has 10.10.10.61?

Ill see if I can get more info for you....

Thanks

You have 2 NIC cards because you configured a VPN connection on the server.

See if you can run a NET VIEW command from both the server and the affected client. If the NET VIEW command does not work then there is a problem with the master browswer. Your PDC emulator maybe malfunctioning.

Also give us details about your network such as the IP ranges, subnets, what services are available (DHCP, DNS, WINS etc.).

Give us an IP configuration screen shot from one of the affected clients.
