Hi,

I just set up an XP Pro computer. I used my domain user account to install all programs and configure settings. Then, I tried to copy my profile to the Default User profile so all users can get the settings. However, when I go to My Computer/Advanced/User Profiles, and click on my user name, the Copy To button is grayed out. I have added my domain account to the local computer as an Administrator. What have I done wrong?!!

I set up another domain user also on this computer as a "restricted user". But he can't open any programs -- Lotus Notes for example -- until I gave the local Users group Modify rights to the program directory (C:\Lotus). Is this normal? I thought members of the Users group could run programs, just not make any changes to them...

I would appreciate any advise...

Are you actually using/in the profile you want to copy when you are trying to copy it? (Hope that made sense.) If so then you will not be able to copy it. Effectively you need three user accounts the one you want to copy, the one you want to copy it to and finally the one you need to be in to do the copying.

Hi Gavin,

Thank you so much for your prompt help. Yes, that's exactly what I was doing! Once I logged in as Administrator I could see the copy to button. But,now I have another problem -- when I browse for the Default User profile, I don't see it! I see only All Users, Administrator and the 2 domain accounts I added...Any ideas?

You need to set folder options to view hidden files. You may also have a problem because the domain account is getting rights from the domain that the default user won't have. The best way to do this is to create a new local user and make the changes you want to that account then copy that to the default user.

Hi Franklin,

Thank you for another quick response! I will get to this in a short while when I have put out some other fires here...pretty exciting start to my day today.

Thank you again.

OK, I think this computer just hates me! I found Default User (it was hidden) and proceeded to copy the profile from my account to the Default User. However, the computer froze midway. I had no choice but to reboot. Now, all the programs that I installed and configured over 5 hours yesterday are there, but NONE shows on the All Programs list! Is there anyway I can get them to show up there? This is frustrating...

Can you just copy and paste some of the missing shortcuts to this location?

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs

Or here?

C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Start Menu\Programs

Hi linney,

Thank you. That's what I did finally. I was hoping for a quicker and neater solution I guess.
