hi, im fairly new to Win2K range & am having a small problem with our network.

I can ping an external address from the server ok but when pinging from a workstation through the network it continues to timeout.

Perhaps theres a filter or something that needs to be set but I can't find it. Its a new install of Win 2K SBS and I'm pretty sure we could get out on our old NT server.

I also want to be able to FTP through the network which I imagine would be the same sort of thing.

Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Scott

Not a lot of info to work from here Scott. By the sounds of things you are using your Server as a router. For this to happen you will need to enable routing on that box.

You may also need to enable or disable NAT on the box as well depending on the config. Generally you will need NAT if the router (in this case your server) has a public ip address on one interface going to the internet, and private IP addresses on another interface going to a lan. If however you have private IP's on both then you most likely don't need NAT (it is probably being done by another router upstream that connects to your DSL or other internet connection).

Another thing that you may need to do is disable the firewall feature on the server if its enabled. This can usually be done on the network interface properties.

Basicly once your able to ping your FTP traffic should also be able to route. Not sure if these detail above are going to help you out or not however, what you may need to do is provide a lot more info. IP addresses on each interface of the server, internet connection type, maybe even routing tables etc. Start throwing up some more details and We can try and help!

Thanks Mike but I think I might have found it.

I went into the ISA Management and found the 'configure protocol rules' wizard.
I have setup FTP & it works ok now. Still can't ping but the main one I needed was FTP.
Ping is ICMP i think, the rules wizard didnt list that protocol though.
