Hello,
I have a win2k server with sp-3. I suddenly cannot ping externally, the name will resolve to an address but then times out? An ip address will resolve but then it also times out. I have internet and email? I can ping my router and machines internally?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Stephanie
I have power cycled the router, I did install the critical update for msblast, but I think this may have started before then, I am not certain?

Usual reasons for your problem -
Server has wrong gateway address
(Internal or external)firewall is blocking icmp packets
Nic error (unlikely in your case)

Anything in the event logs? Can clients ping outside? Have you tried re-booting? Good luck and let us know. (Tracert someone on the outside and see who stops you.)

The same thing happened to my Win2K Pro workstation a couple of weeks ago, right after I installed the MSBlaster patch and other critical updates. Unfortunately I had also just updated the firmware on my Linksys router and then we experienced the massive power failure. I didn't know where to begin.

I eventually uninstalled all MS patches, fixes and service packs, then went to Windows Update and installed everything there was to install. Problem fixed.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but I just haven't had the time to do any indepth analysis.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your responses. I did not get to work on this today. I know that the server has the right gateway, we do not have an actual firewall, just a router. I cannot ping work from home. I will try to get in a full reboot this weekend. I will also try a traceroute. It does seem to kind of coincide with the install of updates, so if the reboot doesn't help me, I will try the uninstall reinstall of updates. Nothing in the event logs jumped out at me, I think I need to go back a little farther.
Thanks for pointing me in a few good directions!
Stephanie
