Hi Guys, hope someone out there can help me with a really frustrating problem!!! Tried everything I know (which is quite limited )

I have a Dell running W2k and have this networked via a router Netgear DG 834 (with internal modem thingy...note the technical term) to a W98 running clone, and both access net via ADSL line.

My Dell is no longer able to communicate with the router via Http addy, cannot ping any address apart from local host and own NW card.

I have tried connecting to net via seperate ADSL modem, and can connect to the service provider but cannot browse or ping.

Have tried un instlling and swapping out NW card, reinstalling TCP/IP, changing/specifying IP addy, changing cable to router, different port on router etc. Have tried Winfix, and Spybot all to no avail. Whatever I do ...zilch! Gut feeling that this is to do with inability to pick up DHCP data from router etc but don't understand why cannot browse when directly connected via ADSL modem, and my knowledge is too limited to sort out the problem.

The W98 machine can see the router, and can connect to net via the same seperate ADSL modem...grrrr!

Many Thanks,
Peter

Hi ChicagoTechNet,

Here are the contents of ipconfig:-

IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : CNet PRO200WL PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-80-AD-78-67-6D
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.179.39
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

As you can see, I am getting Autoconfig IP address, although when I put in IP/Sub/N Gateway and DNS details I still have no joy.

Hope you can help,

Many Thanks,
Peter

Why do I get 169.254.x.x IP?

Symptom: The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved 169.254.0.0-169.254.255.255 for Automatic Private IP Addressing. If the computer can't get ip from DHCP, APIPA provides an address that is guaranteed not to conflict with routable addresses.

Resolutions: 1) Make sure you have good connection.
2) Check the hardware and settings.
3) Make sure the DHCP is working.
4) For the test, you can assign static ip. If static ip works, it is possible DHCP issue. If static ip doesn't work, check the hardware or connection.

Hi ChicagoTechNet, thanks for the ideas but as you will see from the original post I do not have a connection at all via the router. I have tried manual connections, swapping out NW card, new cable, different port and connecting via modem not router, but none of this works.

Do you have any other ideas please?
Thanks,
Peter

Most probably the netgear adsl/router is gone. (or but unlikely the config is gone like DHCP or NAT was disabled).

ADSL modem no 2 is working but is not configured properly. Like no DNS entry, win98 is working maybe because DNS ip is hardcoded and the dell pc is not.

Well problem is solved now. Unfortunately never did find out what it was, so wiped hard disk and rebuilt from scratch.:-( .
