I exported an InDesign document as a PDF from a mac and sent it via email to someone on a PC and everytime she tries opening the PDF in Acrobat an error message of "cannot parse file" occurs.

Any idea as to why this happens as I have sent this person numerous PDFs before without any problems.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Does she have the version of Reader required to open the level of PDF that you created?

Did you prefight the INDD file before producing a PDF file?

Did you send the file in a ZIP archive? A damaged PDF may open partially. A damaged ZIP file will not let you extract the PDF file at all. This may be a good way to troubleshoot a spotty internet/mail transfer.

She does have required version of Acrobat to open the PDf. No I did not preflight the INDD file. Should I?

I did not stuff or ZIP the file, I just attached it to the email and pressed send.
Any other ideas?

Try opening the pdf on your machine - just to make sure there isn't a problem.

Also try using one of the pdf export presets - without changes - in ID. I generally use the preset "print" quality for sending drafts to clients.

Make sure that you have set your email preferences for attachments to something like "encode for any computer" so that it can be opened by mac. pc, etc. If you send attachments to other people on pcs and they can open them, your settings are already ok. One other thing - if AOL is involved things can go wierd with attachments.
