Could anyone tell me how to solve this? This usually happens to me when I am trying to help a client to set the router up.The computer is obtaining an IP address with an IP of 192.168.1.x.I can Ping the router fine, but when I am about to enter the 192.1681.1.1,then IE(Internet Explorer)will prompt me with "Internet Explorer could not open the search page".I set the Security Log-On using the "Automatic Log-On with current Username/Password" and the Security Level using the "Medium-Low".But still nothing,(this trick sometimes work),i also set the computer using a static IP,and this also sometimes work. But the question is,I already tried both of them on a particular computer,it doesn't matter if it's running Winodws 9x,2000 and XP.I don't know if this problem has something to do with the Operating System, the IE or with the router?
Guys, please help?Is there anymore advance troubleshooting
for me to provide?Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.Thanks.

Julius

The "trick" is to set the password authorization to prompt for username and password.

If IE supplies the actual username and password from their Windows box this comes as a surpise to the Linksys expecting a blank username and "Admin" as password.

Click the link below and see if you access the setup. If not, adjust the Intranet zone as I mentioned:

There is no firewall running or any Antivirus running on the computer.I used to check all the settings on the IE,and still won't work.
Where am I supposed to enter the Password Authorization on the IE?Does this problem has something to do with the router or with the IE Settings?

Let's start again.

Under IE, set Internate, and Intranet security settings as low as possible. Under each Icon, Custom Level, scroll to the bottom and click to enable prompting for username and password.

Next, under the properties for the network adapter, TCP/IP properties, do not use "Obtain an IP address automaticly", specify an IP of 192.168.1.2, subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway 192.168.1.1

Apply these changes.

Then Start, Run, CMD

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /all

The IP for that machine should show as 192.168.1.2, and the Gateway should be 192.168.1.1.

Start IE, http:\\192.168.1.1
The username is empty
The password is admin

You should be in.

Or, after a reboot, and starting IE and trying again, you cannot get on, there is a cable issue or a bad NIC.

The thing is I can the Ping the 192.168.1.1. and the computer is obtaining an IP of 192.168.1.102.How come the NIC is bad?Coz' when I'm trying to open up the 192.168.1.1,the IE will then just suddenly pop up,"Internet Explorer Cannot Open the Search Page",like what I stated.

In addition to that,my connection is wireless and the system is running XP.

Well I think that you're encountering a problem with your IE, have you tried different browser like Natscape? You could also uninstall/reinstall IE.

If you said that you are running wireless, have you ever tried pinging other IP Address besides 192.168.1.1, coz if you do then we could definitely say that there is no problem with the card. Even the fact that it could ping the IP of router. In troubleshooting, you could also ping this IP Address: 207.69.188.185, a loopback for your gateway. If you have successfully ping your network, then your browser might really having a problem.

Ironwill,

have you tried typing This is a common workaround if you're unable to access the set-up page by plainly typing 192.168.1.1 on your browser. Another thing is, make sure that you configure your IE browser connections properly. One way to verify if your IE browser is working fine is to setup a proxy server, using 192.168.1.1 and port 80. If your browser is working fine, it would automatically look for that 192.168.1.1 coz it's serving as your proxy server and then should automatically ask you for your username and password

Maidenguy,
I usually do that. But still no luck.

Ironwill,
Try using other browsers as well. Or uninstall/reinstall your IE

peace and i'm out

ironwill,
An IP of 192.168.1.102 is within the DHCP scope of the router by default. You cannot use this as a static IP address. It will not work.

Set the static ip to 192.168.1.2

You cannot use static IPs in the range 192.168.1.100 -- 192.168.1.150 by default.

If you can ping, and you set the IE security settings for the password as I suggested earlier, try the link again in my earlier post. You should see a username and password prompting box on the screen.

If it doesn't work as bcastner describes it do a hard reset on the router by holding the reset pin in for more than 15 seconds and then try again. The password will be reset to factory defaults. You also might just have a bad router.

Franklin,
I guess sometimes I cannot reset the router because there are already 2 computers working on the internet.Well, I guess on that kind of case I better Uninstall/Reinstall the IE.
Well,I could reset the router maybe but if the situation is if the client is just only using 1 computer or initial configuration of the router.
Thank you guys...

Julius

ironwill,

Keep in mind that a ping test does not mean that you can access the site, only that you have basic connectivity.

From a wired client, (not wireless), if you tried the IE security settings, and set a static IP of 192.168.1.2, and pointed the Gateway address to the router at 192.168.1.1, and still cannot get on, my only other suggestions are:

1. Set manually the speed and duplex mode of the adapter to 10-half duplex under Device Manager.

2. Try a different cable between workstation and router.

Then try again.
