I have put a repair on the outlook office package. But I still cannot open any attachments named "resume.doc". The
exact error message is as follows:- Cannot save the attachment. Cannot create file : Resume.doc. Right click the folder you want to create the file in and then click properties on the shortcut menu to click your permissions for the folder.

I 've tried this but adding to user to the folder and given them full permissins does nothing so any other sugestions would be helpfull

Thanks

Please clarify.

1. Are you stating this only occurs with this ONE specific file?

2. Are you stating this only occurs with this ONE specifically named file. So if you create a new file named resume.doc - that file will also cause this error?

3. You state you can not "open" the attachment, but the error message states it can not "save" the file. This is crucioal. Please confirm.

If you have Norton Anti Virus, open NAV and disable the Office Plug-in under Preferences.

1) I am only refering to any file in an attachment called "resume.doc". As I'm working on behalf of a a recruitment agency the percentage of CV's with this title is high.

2) It is possible to create and re-open a file called resume.doc but not to open attachments with this name.

3) Both, cannot open doc immediatly or save to disk.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Go into internet option on clear you temp files. Everytime you open the resume.doc file, outlook will create a temp file called resume01.doc, resume02.doc etc.
Once you reach 99 it will stop functioning. (It happenes alot with me because I have alot of same name files from outlook)

Clearing out your temp files is an excellent suggestion.

Also, opening attachments from Outlook is not all that great anyway. It can cause Outlook to create, not a temp file, but a permanent file in a folder named OLKxxxx - where the xxxx is various numbers and letters.

"any file in an attachment called "resume.doc" is a misleading statement. There are no files IN attachments unless that attachment ina archive (.ZIP) file. An attachment named resume.doc is a file.

My advice is to NEVER open attachments. Our network in fact disables this. You must save the attachment, then open the saved file.

However, try cleaning out your temp files (do a global search for *.tmp). Check to see if you have any folders named OLKxxxx, and delete any files in there as well.

Deleting the OLK files works. We also had a user that was getting the message "Can't create file: *.doc" Then it asked you to check permissions for the folder. This was from trying to open Word docs from outlook 2003. Seems to be working now.

If deleting the OLK files worked, then I strongly recommend that you educate (uh....try to....) users to NOT open attachments from email.

1. Version issues. As stated, if you are having problems with files in the OLK folders, it is VERY important to remember that these are full files. They are not pointers. Any changes made to documents opened from the email are NOT saved in the original locations.

2. Space and clutter issues. This does not seem consistent from system to system. However, we had one user who had 4 Gb of files in their OLKxxxx folder. To be noted.

Hi All,

Just a quick update, deleteing temp files seems to hang the computer, the same is true for deleting olk files from the temp directory, we are having another user open these emails (forwarded) but is there a more permanent solution?

You can start by changing the default path that Outlook saves files. It needs registry hack, but you can use this free tool to achieve this:

Create a separate folder on the local HDD and then use the tool to change the default path to the new folder. It will at least make it easy to find and empty when needed!

As other have suggested, you need to try to stop users opening attachments before saving them to somewhere safe. I presume that the resumes end up being saved to a folder specific to the client? If the users rename the attachment as they save them, it will resolve the problems.
