I'm trying to open an archive.pst file from a CD and get the error message, "parameter incorrect or not defined". After following MS troubleshooter to copy the file to my hard drive, I get another error message "cannot copy archive. The parameter is incorrect." Any suggestions?

Thanks

So, you are simply dragging and dropping the file from the CD to a folder on your hard drive? I just want to make sure you aren't able to get the file copied to your HD. If so, then it sounds like the file itself is corrupt.

What OS are you running (i.e WIn98, Win2K, etc.)?

I'm running Win2000. Actually, I'm right click copying the file and trying to paste it on my desktop. Also, even prior to that, I can't get past the "access denied" message when trying to uncheck the read-only attribute. Maybe the file is hosed like you say.

Well, you can't uncheck read-only on a cd. It has that attribute by default. Plus, in order to change anything on a cd, you have to be able to write to it. Unless you have the cd formatted using DirectCD for example, you aren't able to change anything on the cd. That's normal.

I don't know if it's possible for you or not, but try booting up using a Win98 floppy disk. At the command prompt. try using DOS commands to copy the file to your hard drive. This will tell you for sure if the file is corrupted.

Thanks for the suggestion. The CD was sent to me from the outside so I'll have the sender made aware of the problem and let them handle it.

If you have got another machine available you could just try and copy it to the hard drive using that machine. that way you will know if it is the CD or the machine that is at fault.

Must be the CD. I've tried it on 2 other PC's and still no go. Thanks for the help.

Make sure Outlook is closed before copying file to HD.
After copying, change file properties to toggle Read-only off.
Then open Outlook and open .pst file.
