I have several users that have emails that cannot be opened or deleted. In the preview pane, I get "This item contains active content that cannot be displayed in the preview pane. Open the item to read its contents” If I try to open the email I get “Cant open this item. The operation failed” and I try to delete the email I get “The item could not be deleted. It was either moved, or already deleted, or access denied.” Most of these, but not all, emails are failure notices from other mail servers, from the sobig virus. (our firewall does not allow .pif files in). I have gone as far as trying to delete them from the M: drive but nothing works. I am getting failure notices from my backups because of these.

I am running Exchange 2000 up to date on all patches and service packs and Outlook 2000/XP clients.

Thanks for the help

Mark

Try using OWA to access and delete them.

I'm Certifiable, not certified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

If the same problem persists in OWA, you will want to disable first client anti-virus and then server side anti-virus.

Hope this helps

I have ran into this problem where they are over there storage limit. So when you try to delete them it trys to put them in the deleted items folder but already being over your limit it won't even let you move them around. The only solution I have found besides upping there mailbox storage limit and then waiting for the change to kick in. You can delete the items by holding the shift key while you delete them. WARNING: This will delete them completely and will not go to the deleted items folder. So be sure you want to delete them completely.

Thanks for the help. Stopping the AV worked. Any ideas on what causes this issue?

Thanks agian

Mark

Hi Mark

Glad to hear that worked. I have seen this many times but am unsure what exactly in the AV causes this. You may want to search your AV vendor's site or contact them regarding this. They may have a patch or a fix for this.
