I open up a folder and I get the following error message Windows Exp. has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the convenience. Error sig says appname is explorer.exe modname mfc42.dll so forth. I have no idea what is causing this problem or how to fix it so if you have any ideas please tell me how to do this in the most basic details as possible thanks

You may want to try either of these three links :

Seems to me that you may have a scanner installed that XP doesn't like or some software: shareware or freeware etc.

This one is a link to the Knowledge Base Search of XP:

1. Search on XP page for: Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience

2. Search on XP page for: mfc42.dll

new update none of that information helped unfortunately. Here is an update. I can open up my folders if doing so from the IE view menu. But when I click on my computer on the desktop or from the start menu I get that error message and it closes. I created another administrater account and when I get on my computer under that administrater I do not have this issue. Where do I need to look to resolve this? I also attempted to do system restore to restore my settings by going back a couple of days and this still did not resolve the issue. lastnight before this all happened I downloaded or installed a program windows V4 but no idea what it was cause have done some since then as well, windows xp help has been no help as well cause there is no reference to an issue like this one. I am aslo getting some errors when I try to open IE^ and then eventually I can get IE to open I reinstalled IE as well and that has still not solved the problem do I need to totally remove IE and all its proporties first?

I've had problems with the mfc42.dll in the past. It is a microsoft shared dll that various programs use, and it sounds to me like yours has been overwritten with a different version that is not compatiable with your system.
Here are a few ideas to fix the problem, uninstall the program you first installed right before this happened. Then do a search for mfc42.dll, rename it to mfc42.old then reinstall ie. If this does not work extract the mfc42.dll from your windows disk and manually replace the one that is there. Hope this helps

that did not seem to help still getting errors, damn this sucks soo bad, seems also if popup window comes up when im browsing the web I get the same error message
