I have three files on the same CD that refuse to open by means of double clicking or using File> Open.

The error message is Cannot Open File. This format file cannot be opened by this application. 8009:20481

I saw one FAQ that says it could be a bad index file. What can I tell the creator of the file to do at her end before resending it to me? Will doing a Save As... and renaming the file help? Or do the files need to be recreated from scratch?

Could it be a bad CD or a bad recording?

Thanks,

Daniel

Hi, angler2229,

You should really copy the contents of the CD-ROM to a local drive before you try to open any of the PM files.

If you have done that, and still get the error messages "Cannot Open File. This format file cannot be opened by this application. 8009:20481"

Then, are you sure the file is a PM file?
However, it's possible the copying of the file to the CD-ROM went wrong.

These pages in Adobe's PM Support KB should help:
* Troubleshoot damaged publications (PageMaker 6.0-7.x)
* Troubleshooting Unopenable PageMaker 7.x Publications in Windows
* PageMaker 6.5 and Later Publication Recovery

Make sure the files are burned using the Joliet/ISO 9660 standard.

John,

I have received files from this school before with only one prior problem, one double page spread with a bad index file. The good news is that I already have the original files saved to my hard drive. I only have to place the photos and copy.

The bad files sent me were missing pages. If I know what they want on the page, I can place the photos myself. The problem is that school is not in session yet, and I don't have the layout or copy, just the photos.

As to the question is it a PM file, the icon looks as though it is, and properties says its a PM 7.0 doc.

These are the last three pages to be sent to the plant, so I knoe that they will want to get the problem fixed very soon. It is a fall delivery.=-)

Thanks,

Dan

The file should not have an extension that says "doc" If it doesn't end in .pmd it isn't a PM7 file.

The properties dialog should say that the file is "PageMaker 7.0 Publication"

Try to open the file in Microsoft Word and see what happens.

When I merge data in Pagemaker 7, the merged record fonts change. Any ideas how to prevent that from happening??
