Hi all,

I am trying to backup a database using enterprise manager, but i keep getting this "Cannot open backup device" error message. I am not trying to backup over a network, i am just trying to backup to a local directory on the c:\ drive.

Has anyone encountered this problem before?

Rob

I have run into that problem. If your device is empty just delete it from the backup folder. When you run the backup it will create a new one. If you need the backup sets in it, then save it off. Also check that no other programs like Tivoli or other backup utilities have a lock on your backup device.

It could be a number of things. Verify all your settings. If you're using a currently existing backup device, check to see if it's a .TRN. If so, you might have a job constantly doing transaction backups that has an open thread on it. Remove that from the box and add in a new path\backup file name and try again...

Also look in Computer Management -> Shared Folders -> Open Files on the actual box itself. This will tell you if someone actually does have the backup file open (like to copy it to another machine, etc.).

It also has the potential to be a corrupted backup device at which point your only option is to try and drop it and then recreate it. If you can't drop it, create a brand new one.

Oh, and if you're trying to backup from a Server to your local machine, SQL doesn't like to do that. It'll copy to the Server's C: drive, but not yours. But I'm sure you already know that given the way you phrased your request. @=)
