cannot open a file on the different platform

I have a problem opening Illustrator files: sometimes I cannot open saved on PC files on Mac computer, sometimes I cannot open saved on Mac files on PC computer. Both Illustrator versions are 10. It happens not all the time, but quite often. (But every time I save them using the same way using the Illustrator default saving settings). Files always have extensions .ai. The Error messages are different, for example: “the file … is an unknown file format and cannot be opened”, but mostly it says that it cannot open this PDF file (although it was not saved as PDF), and the error is -39 (if I am not mistaken).
Sometimes files are converted to PDF by themselves, but it is possible to open them in Illustrator. Many people that I know have the same problems.
I would very appreciate any help.

When transferring the files between computers, are they on a floppy disk? If so, the disk must be PC-formatted to go from Mac to PC. Not sure about the other way i.e. PC to Mac - perhaps you need to remove the file extension?

Thank you, but it is not a problem: there were different devices, including zip disks and both platforms USB disks (and I know about PC formatting issue), also we used them not once before the problem occurred.

Are you trying to pull the data right off of the USB/Zip drives? If so try copying them to the local drive and see if that works. I had the problem with our servers today and the only work around I found so far was to take the file from the server and put it on the local drive. Which will then let you open it up with out the -39 error. Hope that helps
