I cannot logon to my windows 2000 server setup as a domain. I created users on the server and they work fine because I was able to logon with these accounts from the server. When I try to logon from my windows 2000 client machine It takes forever, then says the domain controller is not available. I have read the post here and tried all the suggestions. Is there a known procedure to follow for this setup? All suggestions are welcome.

Thanks...

Yes I can ping the server. I can also connect to the ftp server using all the accounts on this server from a client machine.

Have you patched your server & workstation with 2000sp2.
If not, you should.
If that still does not work try starting the DNS service on the server and then typing the DNS ip address on your workstations. That seemed to work for me.

Good luck anyway!!!

Hi Nerine,

Have you tried to release the ipaddress?
try:

C:\> ipconfig/release

and
C:\> ipconfig/renew

then
C:\> ipconfig/all

I had a similar problem and it was down to the DNS server. It was not replicating to its fellow controllers so basically gave up the ghost. The workstations, not finding a DNS server for name resolution tried the time old netbios methos which took about 5 mins per machine, still couldnt resolve. I ended up moving the DNS server to a diff server than the dom controller and it all works fine now.

Check the forward lookup zones on your DNS and see if any machines have been registered.

Stop/restart your DNS.

Hope that helps you a little......

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have found a fix for my problem. I edited the hosts file in c:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc. I just pointed the pdc to the ip address.

eg: 192.168.2.4 pdc

I was then able to change the computer and domain name, and now could login. Thanks for all the help.

I always did like hosts and lmhosts, even if some people think they're outdated by dns. Sometimes problems are found in old hosts and lmhosts files. Glen A. Johnson
