Hi!

When logging on to the network, We used to be able to choose whether if we wanted to logon locally or to the domain. But now, the server only lets us logon to the domain and that's it. It does not show me the local machine name on the network logon page it only shows the domain name.

We must logon locally to create local user groups on the server for a citrix user and resource management tool.

The server is a memeber of the domain and is not a domain controller.

Again, we could select the local computer or the domain when logging on to the network in the past. But now, we only can select the domain.

I would greatly appreciate some advice.

Thanks.

And you are absolutely sure that no one ran DCPROMO on that system? Go to My Network Places and find that server from a remote machine. See if it has a Netlogon share. If so, you have a DC. I can't think of any other reason why you wouldn't have a local accounts database. Are there any errors in your event log from the Netlogon service?

ShackDaddy,

Our Domain Controller is running NT 4.0. I have never used DCPROMO. How can I see if the server has a Netlogon share?

I have looked at Microsoft's sorry website for any kind of clue but have not find anything related to this problem.

What if I remove the server from the server list on the domain controller and try to login? would that work?

I would be very greatful for any advice.

Thanks.

To check for a NETLOGON share, you would just use Network Neighborhood and find the server. If the share exists, it will show up in a list. I'm not sure what's going on. Maybe something in the Netlogon service that manages local authentication is broken. What happens when you log on to that system as a domain user and use the Manage Computer tool to access the local accounts? Can't you manage your local accounts and groups using that?
