Having recently upgraded to windows xp, i tried to connect to the net. No modem was found by windows xp. I have tried to install drivers for a basic 56k modem on ports comm1 and comm2 but still it wont even admit that i have a modem connected. I've tried placing the modem in other sockets but nothing works. Please help, i'm really really stuck.

Cheers

Mark.

My modem is an internal one is yours? This is always set up to use COM3 without any action on your part, no need to select any other COM.

Try using the Generic modem driver included in XP. To do this proceed through the Update Driver tab found on the modem properties page. Use the option where you select the driver, and from the list select Generic.

Yes the modem is internal. I cannot change the drivers because it is not actually listed as being connected to the computer. It is not listed in the hardware profiles. What do i do?

This is from the Help and Support program.......

If your modem is not installed automatically, use Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel to install it manually. To open Phone and Modem Options, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Phone and Modem.

To install an unsupported modem
You must be logged on as a computer administrator in order to complete this procedure.

Open Phone and Modem Options in Control Panel.
If you are prompted for location information, specify the dialing information for your location, and then click OK.

On the Modems tab, click Add.
In the Install New Modem Wizard, select the Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list check box, and then click Next.
Do one of the following: If Do this
A modem is listed that is a good match for your modem On the list of modems, click the manufacturer and model that is the best match for your modem, and then click Next.
If your modem is not listed, and you have an installation disk or .inf file provided by the manufacturer Click Have Disk and specify the location of the disk or .inf file

Follow the remaining instructions provided by the Install New Modem Wizard.
Notes

To open Phone and Modem Options, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Phone and Modem Options.
If possible, get the latest installation disk or modem .inf file designed for Windows XP from the manufacturer. This can usually be downloaded from the manufacturer's Web pages. If Windows XP installation files are unavailable, you can try using an installation disk or .inf file for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows Millennium Edition. It may work correctly in Windows XP as well.
If no installation file is available for the modem, the manufacturer's instructions that came with the modem may specify a compatible modem. Otherwise, click (Standard Modem Types) in Manufacturers, and try choosing the standard modem with the speed that matches your modem.

Okay thats fair enough. But when i try to manually install the modem, windows xp gives me a choice of either comm port 1 or comm port 2. How do i tell it that the modem is on comm 3 as it is an internal modem.

What are your modem and hardware details?
Is this dual boot with other operating system?
Will XP find it if you remove modem from other system?

You might try looking in your device mananger under "other devices". If you have a winmodem, those are famous to end up there until you update the drivers for that particular device. After you install the updated drivers, it will go in its appropriate category, ie. modem,
If it can't find it on COM3 and if Windows ask what port your modem is on, choose COM1 for an external
modem or COM2 for an internal modem.

Have you tried it on COM2?
(starting to clutch at straws here. Sorry)

hi mate,
I'm in the same boat - itsa headin' for the falls and I ain't got no ores! Please can some one help us xp/internal modem users!

if it is a winmodem (software),that may be the problem. sometimes xp and winmodems don't play well. you may need to upgrade to a better modem that uses hardware to connect. there are several available that support xp. or another choice is to go external. hope this helps.

If the modem has to use com 3 and it doesnt exist you need to add new hardware and add com 3. I would first check device manager and see if there is a conflict showing for a PCI simple communications controller or serial port. If there is then reinstall the drivers for the device listed as having a conflict and when prompted select have disk and point to the modem drivers.

I would try to upgrade your BIOS... same thing happened to me and it worked fine after the upgrade.
