IS-IT--Management
Here is what I tried.
I have a server which uses a Tyan Toledo i3210W
(S5211) Intel® 3210 Chipset mainboard.
It is running XP 64-bit (clean install) using the onboard Intel ICHR9 SATA RAID, 2 x SATA RAID1 disk in RAID1. – all works
perfectly.
Due to BackExec10.1d not working with XP 64-bit (well unsupported) I need to install XP SP2 32-bit on the
server and this is where it goes wrong.
I do the following:
1) I download the 32 bit XP driver from the Tyan site
(Intel_RAID_v7.5.0.1017_32bit) and create the driver on floppy for my "F6" install – I have also used the utility on the Tyan support CD to create an “F6” driver diskette
2) I connect an external USB floppy drive and insert driver disk
3) BIOS is not touched, left just as it was with the working XP 64-bit system, it is set as follows:
Serial ATA: Enabled
Native Mode: Auto
SATA RAID: Enabled
4) I reboot server with it booting from XP Pro + SP2 CD
5) XP proceeds load, I hit "F6" and load the Intel ICH9R SATA RAID driver, it loads the driver fine and the proceeds to the next stage
6) Next it detects the hard disk/partitions and volume and ask me to create a partition, all usual stuff, I except the defaults
7) Next is the formatting, I select “Quick Format” it formats the disk with no problems
8) I then briefly starts to load stuff but then a prompt appears displaying the following:
“Insert the disk labelled:
Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver into drive A.”
I have 2 choices now, either “Enter” to continue, or “F3” to quit, I tried enter to continue (with the driver floppy still inserted), it does nothing, the floppy activity LED does not even flash or anything, I’m left with no choice but to “F3” and quit.
9) I looked up the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver and I believe it is the management software for the Intel RAID which runs from within the OS, and it is over 5MBs in size, so how can this fit on floppy, even if this correct?
10) I then decide to start over using the exact same process as above but using the XP 64-bit CD and the XP 64-bit Intel RAID driver, it installs fine and no prompt is displayed requesting the “Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver”
11) I have compared (the best I can) the driver on the floppies between the 32-bit and 64-bit, they seem much the same, same number files, same names etc.
What am I doing wrong? If I follow the same procedure for XP 64-bit is all works fine.
