I'm trying to create a dual-boot setup by adding Win2K Pro to my WIN ME OS.
I get the following messages:

"The option to upgrade will not be available at this time because setup was
unable to load the file c:\windows\upgdlls\w95upg.dll\win9xupg\w95upg.dll"
(in fact the dll mentioned is in the c:\windows\upgdlls folder)

"Windows 2000 could not detect the version of windows you are currently
running. Setup cannot continue". I'm running a fully updated version of
WinME (AMD AThlon 1Ghz processor, 256 Mb of RAM, 30 Gig HD).

Many thanks in advance

I am presently installing on 6 different machines Win ME and Win 2000 Pro.

The first time we did it we found that win 2000 was taking over ME, by exemple only one Internet Eplorer browser was install and on the Win 2000 directory.

So what we just did is Reinstall everything, but this time we first made 2 different partition (about 5 Gig each) and the we installed ME first and Win 2000 in second.

Now it seams to work properly.

Microsoft do say that installation on the same partition can cause problems, so I would suggest having two partitions for each OS. Install Windows ME first then go onto install Windows 2K.

Step 1: Create 2 partitions, preferably on 2 distinct drives.

Step 2: Install Windows 2000 Pro. Get all your hardware drivers and whatnot installed for it.

Step 3: Tell w2k to use other partition for swap file.

Step 4: Install Windows Me on the drive/partition you didn't use for 2K.

Step 5: Tell Me to use the w2k swap file for its swap file (bet ya didn't know that one huh?)

Windows ME will install beautifully this way, won't wreck the MBR or W2K Bootstrap loader, and if you have more than 1 drive it works great. Keeps your WinME stuff separate from your 2K stuff without hassles.

If you're DETERMINED that you simply MUST upgrade rather than installing cleanly, after you've flogged yourself for a suitable length of time with a suitable length of hose, do a quick net search for that DLL on your fave DLLSite. Install it to EXACTLY the path being referenced by 2K - you'll find you probably already HAVE that DLL and it just isn't where 2K thinks it ought to be. Once the DLL is where 2K thinks it should be, the upgrade works fine, other than the fact that it'll take you about a month to finish as it figures out what gets to stay and has to go...hope you got a big pooper scooper.
