I had a virus which corrupted my server a few weeks ago. I have since been advised to save the pain and re-install NT4 from scratch. I have a 12Gb HDD, 2Gb as C: and 10.xGb as D:, whenever I try to instal NT4, it goes through the whole process and when its time for the final restart, I get a blue screen of death with all these filenames which supposedly don't work.

Can someone tell me how much space should be reserved for C:, should it be formatted in NTFS only or a portion as FAT? and what about the other 10Gb is that a problem for NT?? I Heard somewhere it cannot recognise partitions larger than 2/4/7 gig?? what can I do to resloves this??

I have treied to partition D: into 3 4Gb partitions and it still died on startup

I would be very grateful for step by step instructions to sort this out. and will buy you lunch if solved!!!

I guess you are doing a manual build of the OS, so the max size of the C drive is 4095MB which can be either FAT or NTFS (pros and cons to either).

There should be no problem with having a 10GB D drive.

What is the message in the Blue Screen?? I suspect that it is something along the line of Inaccesible Boot Device (normally indicates that the disk controller needs a 3rd party driver).

Check your hardware and make sure you have all relevant drivers, plus look at the information in the Blue Screen, the answer might well be in there. The text could be something like STOP: 0x0000007B INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE, use that to search on Technet.

Is this the same hardware setup as was working previously (ie, pre-virus)?

Versions of NT pre service pack 4 can only cope with drives up to 8GB (they'll generally see bigger drives - but as 8GB). So, if your NT install CD is pre-SP4.... (but I'm wondering what you're using to partition drive. If NT install partitioning tools - then obviously must be SP4 or later, as its seeing all 10GB. If you're using something else, would suggest starting again using NT install's partitioning tools - and only create the system partition to install into. You can partition the rest once NT is up & service packed, using disk administrator.
