Cannot empty PS files from Recycle Bin 1

Hi, not sure if I'm asking this in the right place but maybe someone else using PS recognises the problem. If there's a more appropriate place to ask this then please say.

Recently I have been unable to empty PS (7.0.1) files from my recycle bin. At this time I have 4 files there that, every time I try to delete them I get this message

Cannot delete Dz28: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

I get this if I try to delete them manually although the Dz number changes, eg. Dz29, Dz30 etc. Please note that Dz29 etc. is not the name of the file/s.

Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it? Or know what may be causing it?

I've had this on my mac before, but I just had to make sure that either I had quit the program, or had not tried deleting from a protected folder.

Well for starters:

Have you removed all temporary files, one may still have a hook into the file you're trying to delete?

Have you re-booted?

Hi, I have just managed to empty them from my recycle bin. I realised it had been a while since I last defragged my drives and so did that. I then rebooted and still no joy. I rebooted again and managed to delete them (???)

mscallisto, not wanting to sound completely stupid but where does PS store it's temp files? Is it somewhere in the C:\WINDOWS\Temp dir? I have a partition that I am using for a scratch disc and there was nothing in the temp dir there.

I believe if you don't set the scratch area PS uses C:\WINDOWS\Temp like you suspected.

In PS Edit > Preferences > plug-ins and scratch

and see if you previously picked a different area.

You probably know this, you should remove all temp files (minus any cookies you may wish to keep) prior to defrag.

Start > programs > Accessories > System Tools > disk Clean-up.

Well I did run a Disk Clean-Up before Defragging but no, I didn't know I had to. Thanks for that information, I will remember that for the future. Could you tell me the reason for doing this?

The more disk space you free up the less work the defragger has to do. The defragger grabs all the "pieces" of a fragmented file and moves them to a contiguous "non-fragmented" area. By removing the temp files and any other un-needed files the gefragger has more free space to work with.

It's like cleaning up your room, throw out the junk first then re-arrange the remainder easier.

Thankyou mscallisto, that's painted a very clear picture as to what the defragger actually does.

Unfortunately I am still getting this problem with deleting PS files from my recycle bin. It's not all, just odd ones. And I am able to delete them eventually. I have nothing in the temp dir on my scratch disk or in c:\windows\temp. Not sure what to do but I'll keep looking into it.
