Cannot download Java software

When I try to download a recent version of Sun Java, at

http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp,

I get this error message: "We encountered an issue while trying to automatically install Java™ software onto your machine. As a result, Java software was not installed properly". What should I do?

I have Windows XP sp2 and Explorer 6.

Try to download the installation program and execute it locally.

After many attempts, I was finally able to download it. I received a Java plug-in 1.5.0_04. But after its installation on my system, the on-line Java counter of my website (

http://www.classicalguitarmidi.com)

no more works. How can that be explained?

Hm - this is a programmers forum, not a support-forum for suns installer.
'After many attempts' - what does that mean?
If I download something I get it - why did you need several attempts?
Bad connection? Virus-trojan-spam box running?
Did you get the jvm too, or just the plugin?

Search your system for the JRE, deinstall it properly, and ask your OS-Support how to do that.

Then follow the instructions at the sun side to install the jre again.

I needed several attempts because I had an error message from the Sun side saying my system didn't have the required configuration, the downloading process was cancelled. Then, in Windows/tools/Internet options/security, I lowered the security level. I tried again and was then able to download the Sun Java software.
I have the Java 2Platform standard edition version 1.5.0_04-b05.My web site's on-line counter shows fine now.(English is not my mother language, sorry for mistakes)
