We have a user who receive a few email from some unknown source with attachment. When she try to delete the email it will give an unknown error message and If you try to open it, It will give you a message that says out of system resources close some windows and try again. No matter what you do the email is stuck in the inbox and can't be moved to the deleted items or any folder.

I tried to use another machine and access her email from different machines and different version of the client still the email stays in the inbox. The mail delivery is on the exchange server mailbox not on personal folders.

We are using Mcaffee for Exchange 5.5 and outlook 98/2000/2002 for clients. I believed those email have viruses and the attachment had been quarantine but for some reasons the message get corrupted and cannot be deleted or moved anywhere.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have seen this problem in my organization. Try logging into the mailbox using the Exchange service account. Sometimes you can delete the messages using this account. If that doesn't work, try opening the mailbox as a secondary mailbox on your Outlook folder list and delete the messages from there. Sometimes that works as well. It's kind of a hit or miss thing for me.

How to fix the problem from happening again: change the GroupShield method of virus scanning from AVAPI to message store scanning. This will prevent the items from being corrupted if they are scanned twice.

Have you tried the Clean Mailbox utility in Exchange Admin?

Beckas,

I was able to delete the corrupted email by opening her mailbox as a secondary and login as a service account admin.

I will try to change the setting of Groupshield to prevent this from happening again.

Thank you very much for all your help.

I'm glad to hear that it worked. By the way, when you change the GroupShield method of scanning, it will restart the Exchange Information Store Service so you may not want to do this in the middle of the day.

Update: Shift + Delete seems to do the trick with deleting these types of items as well.

beckas,
I've had a few messages stuck in my mailbox for awile now. Never thought to try shift-delete. Works like a charm. As star for you!

Some thing to also remember if you install the latest mdac you can link to you exchange folder through access. I usually delete them that way.

Also, when this happens you can log on to OWA and delete the messages as the user. Somtimes when you tell them to select it they double-click and open it.
