Hi all,

I have a few "psd" and "jpeg" files that Windows XP will not allow me to move to other directories because XP claims they are "being used by another program". They are NOT. I've checked the file "properties" and find nothing there that would be causing the problem. Can anyone tell me how to make these files moveable and/or renameable again? The psd files I can "save as" another name but I don't want to do that to the jpegs due to the loss of quality issues.

Any and all help greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Have you shut down and restarted?
If so, try to make copies of the files and rename them, then shut down and delete them in safe mode.
If all else fails you can delete them thru a command prompt.

There is a free app 'Process Explorer' than can tell you which process has the file open.

Moe: It could have been a real ugly situation, but luckily I managed to shoot him in the spine.

Have you done disk clean-up lately?
A temporary file could still have a hook in your jpeg or psd file.

Ah ha! That sounds like a real possibility. I've never used Disk Cleanup. Looked at it (or something similar) when I was using Win Me but did not use it as I got the impression that it was looking to free up disk space by removing lots of "unneeded" files including jpegs, etc. I was not sure if I would have the chance to veto any of its selections so I did not run it. Is Disk Cleanup veto proof or can I edit its selections?

Thanks for the help mscallisto, and you too barehug!

yes there are check-box choices for you make.

Particularly you should remove temp files as these "could" be a problem.

Alternately you can remove temp internet files (space hogs), and cookies (remember some cookies may have been set by you as convienences such remembey my log-in ID etc.)

The rest of the options should be clear to you to make a decision as to remove or not.

Still as to a fix to your problem, this is just a guess.
