Hello.

I think my user account has been corrupt.
Ntuser.Dat
Ntuser.dat.log
Ntuser.ini
I understand these are the files needed to be copied to the new user to keep the desktop and configuration settings.

XP HOME SP2; I am in the new login I created when I try to do this. ACCESS DENIED IS THE RESULT.

The HDD is NTFS. I have no tools to see the HDD from a non-Windows environment.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi,

If I understand your scenario correctly this is what you are doing:

You are copying these files to your new account with yourself logged as the new user?

If this is the case then that would explain your problem.

This is what you need to do.

Restart your PC.

Create a temporary account with computer administrator access. Log in as the new temporary user. Copy these files from your old account to your new account (not the temp one you are logged in as).

The copy should then complete and you can log in as the new user and delete the temporary account.

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks.

Gavin.

Dont just copy the files... you need to use the user profile copy tool.

Go to your system properties and then to the advanced tab.. then in the User Profiles area hit settings.. from this window you can copy profiles to a different area (you can also assign rights to the profile through this window).

You can also use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizzard through start/accessories/system tools

(keep in mind you do need to reboot to release the user profile files, log in as admin)

I tried what you suggested. The file is not accessible, when logged in as the new admin. user.

I got the same error using explorer.

Thanks for your replies.

Don't know why you want to copy those particular files in that way. Instead, try this:
1. Create a new profile and logon.
2. Log off and log in as a local admin
3. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Old Profile name
4. From there, copy the desktop, my documents and favorites folders and paste them into C:\Documents and Settings\New Profile name folder
This will give you everything but your desktop wallpaper, (which is probably still stored and just needs to be reset), your printers and your IE homepage. Those are easily redone.

Your idea worked. What I was trying to do with those specific files, was suggested from Microsoft.

Oh well, yours worked.

Funny. The admin. is invisible. And the account I was copying the data from could only be copied if I was logged on to it. A while ago, I used Windows utility to "simplify my login process. That may have caused these accounts to be invisible when I login.

Thanks for ALL your responses.
