Hello all, been wrestling with a problem on my laptop.

I have installed SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.

When I try to connect using the Management studio, I get the following error:

*********************************************************

TITLE: Connect to Server
------------------------------

Cannot connect to BUONOASUS\SQL2005.

------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate chain was issued by an authority that is not trusted.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -2146893019)

As I say, it has been an issue for a couple of days. I have looked at loads of Google results that mention certificates etc. but none of those paths have worked out.

My laptop is Windows XP Service Pack 2, loads of RAM.

SQL Server service runs as my own admin account ( I have also had it running as LocalSystem).

I also get the same message if I try to create a new Database from within Visual Studio 2005.

Any help on this?

I would suggest resetting the sa password and see if that helps. Also, have you ever been able to get in? If not, then the installation may have went amiss somewhere. If it's something that just recently happened, then try to go through your logs and find out what's happened since that time.

I have tried to log in using my windows account AND the sa account but neither worked.

This has never worked on my laptop.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled SQL Server 2005 at least 6 times to try to resolve this issue.

It sounds like you might have changed the Authentication mode to Windows Only before you created a Windows login on SQL Server.

I suggest reinstalling it......making sure it is set to Mixed Mode authentication. Then create a login (using your Windows login) and set that to Windows Authentication. Then test the connection. If it works, you can switch the authentication mode to Windows only.

I always set it to Mixed Mode authentication, using my own login and a memorable sa password.

I have now restored the machine to pre-2005 state and will see how it goes from here.

Ho-hum.
