i have server 2003 and a domain controller and dns server installed, i installed this all then made myself an account, when i try and connect my other computer to the domain with the administrator account this message comes up:

The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "SIMPSON":
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation

i have got a new domain in a new forest so this should let me log on, any help with this matter would be greatfully appreciated,

thankyou in advance

SIMPSON - this is my domain name (also my surname thats why i chose it :])

Additional Details

i have verified that i am using the correct username and password for the administrator account

So you've been through the steps to make it a domain controller - got active directory up and running?

When you try to connect to domain do you get a prompt for account to verify this - then get your error message, or get the error message immediately? (I'm guessing former as you say you're using correct username password for administrator - are you sure its the domain admin details you're supplying.

You might want to try forum931 - as its really a 2k3 not an XP problem.

PS. You haven't mentioned networking details - server and prospective workstation are on the same network? What is set up (router? server also DHCP server? something else)

A couple of diagnostic tools and other suggestions are to be found in these semi-similar threads.

Can you log on from Safe Mode With Networking?

do you have dhcp or static IP. I use static IP and have to insert the servers IP as the prefered DNS number. after I did that the machines were able to join the domain. Can you ping the domain controller?
