My brother has a serious problem with his PC. He initially had problems having installed AV Personal and then he made the same mistake that i did a while ago - he downloaded Limewire. Now he can't boot into Windows at all. He has tried safe mode but that doesn't go in either. He bought the PC second hand and has no boot disk and no CD. Is the only way around this for him to make a boot disk from somebody else's computer or is there something else he can do?
Thanks - as always

I'm really sorry to harp on about this and I'm sure you're all bored now, but I really feel sorry for my brother as he's seriously been ripped off. Anyway, he can't get into anything anymore on his PC because he keeps getting an Alt.dll error message. When I look on the web it seems the way to remedy this is to rename the dll from the cab files on the CD but of course he doesn't have the CD because the shop says "no". Does anybody have any links that he can try (provided of course the pC lets him get on!).
Thank you all for your patience.

try pressing F8 once the post test has run. There will be a list of boot options come up, one of which is interactive. He can then choose to load some drivers and not others. He may be able to bypass the problem this way.

Do you or he know anyone who has a 98 Disk and a boot floppy. He could then boot to the dos prompt, find the errant file and replace it.

To charge him for a license of 98 at the extreme cost they charged...without the CD... Have him call Microsoft. The corporate office in your country may help...I am only familiar with the USA offices. They may help.

Also, He should really should file a lawsuit for the CD and their extreme cost of the OS. At this point I would put the computer away and start looking for a newer machine.

The shop may be able to sqirm out of any criminal actions against your brother if he does not have any paperwork to back up what the shop is telling him and it is all verbal.
That is why a Civil Lawsuit may get their attention.
Once you file they may either settle and fix the machine and give the CD of the OS(which is what you want in the first place). Be open and up front with them that is what you want and it may settle peacefully. OR, they may fight you tooth and nail...and it will get ugly.

Here is a great link of some boot floppy programs

Also on the computer look and see if this file is on the the computer?

C:\windows\options\cabs

If it is there you may have the OS in that file
