I am trying to add a Windows 2003 Enterprise R2 node to our Windows 2000 2 node cluster but I keep having this same problem and cannot figure out why it does not work.
Setup:
Windows 2000 Advance Server 2 Node Cluster attached to a SAN (SAN not an issue). Production NIC and Heartbeat NIC in each. Heartbeat NIC are plugged into a dedicated switch seperate from the network.

Goal:
Add Windows 2003 Enterprise R2 Node to Cluster to migrate off of Windows 2000. This server has a Production teamed NIC and a single heartbeat NIC attached to the same switch as the Windows 2000 cluster. This server can ping the windows 2000 cluster's heartbeat IP addresses over the dedicated heartbeat switch.

When trying to run the add node wizard. It fails at the RPC communication test. The cluster is found via NetBIOS name and resolves the IP address however it still doesnt work..
Here is my log:

According to the log it's having problems resolving the cluster's virtual name to the virtual IP.

Are you able to ping the virtual IP from the new machine? Are you able to go to a UNC path to the virtual name (\\VirtualName)?

Is the new machine is the same subnet as the cluster?
Is the new machine on the Windows domain?
Is the new machine on the same domain as the cluster?

(Sorry for the basic questions, but it's better to ask them, then to not.)

First check you network configuration. The following whitepaper explains it detailled.

Second NetBIOS over TCP/IP must be disabled.

Third thing is it looks like you are running your cluster not with SP4.If this is the case you should first install SP4 and try again after that.

Guide to Creating and Configuring a Server Cluster
under Windows Server 2003

9. On the WINS tab, verify that there are no values defined. Click Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP as shown in Figure 6 on the next page.

I figured it out.. It is a name resolution issue. For some reason someone put the DNS A record for the Cluster hourc607 in hourc607.fdy.moc.com instead of hourc607.hou.moc.com.

That will be fixed. I was able to put an entry in the hosts file of the new Windows 2003 node with cluster's IP address and hourc607.hou. That allowed for the add node wizard to complete successfully. Thanks for all the questions and suggestions.

Mike

No problem.
