Hey,

It seems my DHCP is failing, there have been a lot of strange things going on. For one, I cannot join a computer to a domain either wireless or wired. Also, for those on the domain, I cannot find printers in the directory. I restarted the servers and dhcp. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Not quite.
In the server options I changed the dns server from the router to the server. Also made sure that settings were right on the static settings for the NIC..
I tried a ipconfig /release , /flushdns . When attempting a /registerdns I recieve: "Registration of the DNS failed: No DNS server configured for local system." And I cannot renew as the client still does not find the dhcp server.

Has someone changed the settings of the specific port (in the hub or switch) you are plugging into? Try moving this workstation to a different-known good location-and try again, or move a known good workstation to this location and test. Something at that spot is preventing the DHCP server from being seen during startup.

Regards,
David.

I moved a good known desktop computer, I cannot grab an IP because the ipconfig/release is timed out trying to connect to the dhcp server.

Recap:
1) You can login if you set this workstation to a static IP.
2) If you move a different, known-good workstation to this location it will not acquire an IP and login.

Q: Has this position ever worked in the past?

Q: Has someone messed with the hub/switch that this position is connected through?

Thanks,
David.

The patch cables are correct and have not been tampered. This setup has worked prior to the upgrade of Server Service Pack 2. Is there any settings SP2 would have automatically adjusted? Thanks.

Not that I'm aware of on SP2. What happens when you move the cable where this workstation is connected into a different port on the hub/switch? Example: Jer's workstation is plugged into port 14, move it to port 15, or an empty port on the switch.

David.

If you can set static ip on workstation and connect,
1. verify you have DCHP running on only 1 device, or at least are dishing out diffent scopes.
2. Connect computer directly to DCHP device(if it is another computer use a cross over cable) and try to obtain an ip, if you can not, then it is a DHCP issue (as long as you can talk with a static ip set. If you do get an ip, next step would be to connect server and workstation to the switch, with nothing eles plugged in (if possible) then try to obtain ip, if you do strart plugging things back into the switch, testing along the way, if you do not get an ip then check cabling etc.

As far as joing the domain, usually as long as workstation DNS setting is set the the DNS server (local ip) you should be able to join the domain.

Sorry about the long post, but hope it helps

One other thing to check, I have had services disabled after SP2 install on server, or check Antivirus

Which services were disabled?

Hi this was you network setup from before(as posted above)

"Our network setup is in the following order:
1.DSL
2.Netgear Firewall
3.Wireless Router(dhcp), Server1(dhcp,dns), Server2, Switch
4.Workstations(from patchpanel from switch)

The router assigns 192.168.1.100 - .254
The switch assigns 10.0.1.1 - .254"

What does your network look like now?
And does your switch assign ip's? and does it really assign a different ip range to the rest of the network?

Regards
Max

you should only have ONE device assigning ip addresses in your enterprise. If you have more than one your clients WILL timeout because each device is fighting for that client. If your server is suppose to be the dhcp device then you need to turn off dhcp on your router and your switch or whatever other device is giving out dhcp addresses.

Hi guys, I notice this now that there was a typo. The two devices on my network assigning IPs are a SERVER and Wireless router (not a switch). The server assigns IPs on the 10.0.. network and wireless on the 192.168.. network. Right now DHCP is off on the router and on for the dns server.

The DHCP was released on the router and unable to grab an IP back. I had to static config. it to use the ip 10.0.1.100. This must be correct because I see it listed in the Address Reservations on the server.

I disabled the dhcp on the router and turned off my wireless. I cleared the static ip in the laptop and tried to obtain automatically it wouldn't; I get the 169.. IP and cannot get online or on IE.

Ok, you only have DHCP operating on one source, with two scopes-10.x.x.x and 192.x.x.x. Right? All other sources of DHCP are disabled, shut down, removed. Right?

Has a helper app entry been placed into the router so that the two subnets will work across your LAN?

David.

Pls explain in greater detail about a helper application. I have a linksys wireless router

Sorry, we use Cisco, I've never used linksys before. Perhaps someone else could jump in here, also, this same job could maybe be accomplished using some routing instructions, either on the router or on the server.

Regards,
David.

P.S. You might pose this question in the TCP/IP forum.

A couple of silly questions, what's the disk space like on your DNS\DHCP server?

Also have you made sure that the hardware isn't disabled in Device Manager for the new pc?

Generally speaking when I have been assigned APIPA addresses it's either been because the DHCP server was having issues (full disk) or the NIC in the workstation wasn't connected.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

A couple of silly questions, what's the disk space like on your DNS\DHCP server? DriveC has 2GBfree, and DriveD 9GB free.

Also have you made sure that the hardware isn't disabled in Device Manager for the new pc? Yes. This problem is with every computer new or old.

Thanks.

Anything further that can be done?

Hi
Ok so just to recap
you have a new pc that won't connect to the domain and find a network address via DHCP, And other PC's within your network now are having issues finding printers ETC.
You only have the one Ip scope being issued for one dhcp server?
You can connect via Static ip though just not dhcp is that correct?

Just another thought i have had something like this on one of our sites. They installed a Fibre connection to a new building and when the pluged in the fibre to the switch they crossed over the connections and they lost all dhcp on site.
That may not be what happened on your site but i found this out on my site the hard way.

Max
