Hello

I have a redhat 9.0 linux box running vsftpd and am having troubles reaching the ftp portion when ever i connect through a web browser. I can access the ftp server fine from an ftp client but get a gateway error when i try to reach it via a web browser.

Any Ideas?

Is there any other way of doing this without allow anonymous login. This a corporate FTP. We do not want to allow anonymous logins.

You might want to remove the "tcp_wrappers" statement. It caused problems for me. I've read somewhere there is a problem with the way vsftpd handles TCP wrappers.

Here's my config to compare. I'm also running Redhat 9.0

# Anonymous Users?
anonymous_enable=NO
#
# Local users (since there is no anonymous access)
local_enable=YES
local_umask=022
local_max_rate=50000
local_root=/var/ftpd/pub/
#
# System wide settings
write_enable=YES
dirmessage_enable=NO
#connect_from_port_20=YES
idle_session_timeout=600
pam_service_name=vsftpd
ftpd_banner=<Blah Blah Blah> Have a great day!
#chroot_list_enable=YES
#chroot_list_file=/etc/vsftpd.chroot.list
#
# System Logging
xferlog_enable=YES
xferlog_std_format=NO
log_ftp_protocol=YES

If your using IE, enter the URL ftp://<your.ftp.server> and when it times out trying to connect anonymously right-click within the contents area and select "Login As..." to specifiy a user and password.

See if anonymous ftp works first. If it does, we can
focus on other permissions problems.

OK i disable tcp_wrapper. Still Time Out Error

Then i enable anonymous logins...still time out error

The FTP client that worked, was it using passive or the traditional ports, 20 and 21.

Most browsers use the passive method for retrieving files as a default. You might try disabling the passive option in IE.

Is there a firewall running on the server? Typing "iptables -L" will display the firewall chain if any.
