Going mad with this one!

Trying to setup SMTP virtual server on Exchange 2003. I cannot telnet to port 25, the connection is dropped.

This works fine locally and from one other server machine.

I have changed the connection restrictions to "All except the list below" and the list is empty.

It looks to me as if the changes that I make in the Exchange System Manager are not taking effect. Is there any possible explanation for this?

I say this becasue the server that can telnet ok was granted permission in the past.

I have recently performed in upgrade from Exchange 2000 but I am currently still running on Windows 2000 Server.

Anyone any ideas how I can allow connections to the Virtual server?

What have you changed since it was installed? By default, the VS works fine out of the box.

Check your authentication and make sure ANONYMOUS is enabled.

Thanks,

the only change I have made since this stopped working was upgrading to Exchange 2003. I think something has been corrupted - it looks to me as if the changes are not being replicated to the Metabase.

I have a work around, I have setup the server that can access the Exchange box as a relay and it is working.

Just a bit worried in case I need to make any further changes!

Thanks

I had exactly the same trouble. Upon upgrading to Exchange 2003 (running on 2000 Server) any changes made in Exchange system manager (to do with SMTP) were not implemented. Specifically, I wanted to allow SMTP acccess from another server.

I think this is due to the changes not being relicated to the IIS metabase.

I was able to use metaedit to make the changes to the SMTP service manually but this was definately by trial and error and I made sure I backed up the metabse first.
