Cannot access a server share 1

I have 4 nt 4.0 servers
Test (pdc)
Qual (bdc)
oscs Member
Prod Member

The Qual server was the pdc until 1 year ago. Test created as bdc and promoted to pdc.

I can access qual from Test and also from oscs, However when i try to access from prod i get the message

\\Qual is not acessable
The network path was not found


I am puzzled when the servers are in hte same domain and are on a local lan.

Any ideas ?

Can you access by IP address? Check your WINS / DNS settings?

I can ping my qual server and I can ping the hostname qual
and get a response.
They both comeback with a ping.

Yeah...this sounds like a name resolution problem...

Try \\xx.xx.xx.xx instead of \\qual

If the above works, you just have a name resolution problem. Server PROD is not using the correct WINS settings.

When you do \\servername at a run command, you are using Netbios resolution. WINS provides Netbios resolution for you. (Note: if the servers are on the same subnet with no routers or switches blocking Netbios traffic, it is possible to resolve to other systems without WINs. This might explain why the other two servers are not having this problem.)

Yes it sounds like no WINS server is specified on prod. Can you access other network names from it? Can you access it via name from run command on other machines?

It was the wins that had gone screwey.
