We use Brightstor ArcServe 9 on a Win2000 server. It was working fine for a couple of weeks, then just stopped, giving us Backup Cancelled messages. I suspected the system was set to append rather than overwrite, which it was, and I changed that setting. But it doesn't seemed to have helped -- now my Activity logs are showing as blank every day. I will try putting in a totally new tape tonight, but please tell me I don't have to erase/reformat my existing tapes to reuse them. How can I look to see what is on a tape? How can I rename the media from a date (1/10/03) to a day of the week (Tuesday)?

Also, how do I get the program registration to come up? I haven't delved into it, but can I register even though the serve is not connected to the 'net?

(total ARCServe newbie, here....) Thanks.

Hello There.
If you're unable to write to media it's probably because your pools are not sufficiently populated.
If you are using the EB default scheme, you will need 4 blank media for daily jobs before Brightstor EB begins to reuse daily media.5 weekly before reuse and 12 monthly before reuse Etc'. The media has to be assigned to the pools for overwrite to occur. I'd look at this first and see what media pool solution suits you best. The GFS solution will handle naming for you. So you can then avoid labelling and naming tapes only for the software to rename them anyway!

To see what's on a tape:-
load the media into your device.
Select the Device option from the Manager views on the left in Brightstor EB manager.
Look at the specific device to get the media name for currently loaded media.
You can then go into the Restore Window and select the media you've identified and review the backup sessions it contains. That's be one way.

Hope this helps.
