Can you start win98 from a DOS prompt?

If you can how do you do it?
I am switching harddrives in out of the machine. It is a dual boot with win98 / linux. Since it is dual boot the other part of the start is on the linux drive which has been temporary removed. So it give me a grub error.

What is the name of the file that starts win98?

Try: Win (You may have to "change directories" [CD] to Windows first).

If in Windows (and you go to a DOS prompt), type EXIT to return to Windows.

Hi micker377,

Well I it tryed and it kind of worked.
It started to load but then gave me an error.
VFAT Device Initalization Failed

System halted

So I guess their is more to it then what you suggested.
Thanks for trying.

The "Win" command is used after the autoexec.bat and config.sys is loaded. "Vfat" may be an error from an anti-virus program not loaded from "Win.ini". I know you get that error when Norton AV is bad.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but it's worth a

try.

When I do a C: Drive restoration from the latest Ghost

Image I have on my Hard Drive, I put these 5 lines at the

end of the Restore Batch file and my computer boots to my

desktop in about 50 seconds after the Image gets restored.

I cannot recall WHERE I found this, but it's been working

for me everytime for the past 5 years, with no problems.

set comspec=c:\command.com
c:
cd\
set winbootdir=c:\windows
c:\windows\win.com

Good luck and let the board know how it worked out for you.
