I am trying to help someone get set up in Outlook, but they were told that now that they have DSL they cannot use Outlook to retrieve their mail using the account from the DSL provider. Is this true? Is there a way to set up Outlook to get DSL mail. (I think it is Pacbell). If my question is too vague, please throw some questions back at me or give me some resources to find the different possible answers. Thank you Dawn

There's no reason why not! I'm on DSL and I use Outlook.

I would have thought you just have to enter the pop and smtp settings to do this.

Do you know how to do this? Have you tried that already and its failed?

Perhaps for sending mail you will need to specify a relay server.

Chris

You just set it up with an Internet Mail Account just as you would on dial-up but you can set the 'Check for new mail' to check more often.

The only difference may be the SMTP and POP settings. Apart from that there is no problem at all with Outlook on DSL

If they are trying to retrieve other (non PacBell) e-mail there shouldn't be a problem, but to send mail they will almost certainly need to send mail through the PacBell SMTP server, not the SMTP server of the other e-mail provider. The other provider will definitely have an anti-spam process which only permits users dialled in through their network to use their SMTP server and PacBell may have some anti-spam process which will check whether the "Reply-To" e-mail address in their e-mail is a PacBell address.

But if they are using an e-mail account on PacBell there should be no problems at all.
