I don't really think there is a automatic way to do this, luckily!
The most foolproof way is press Ctrl-Alt-Del simultaneously, or right-click on the task bar, click on Task Manager, and on the Processes tab, find the hung program process. Right click and select "End Process Tree".
This goes one step further than ending just the process that has hung by ending the processes and threads started by that process, any one of which may be holding up the main process.
"End Process" alone may not be able to close it all down, so you may get into a loop of dismissing an "End Program" dialog, only to find afterwards the hung app still there in a hung state.
One stage further is to replace Task Manager with Process Explorer from the Sysinternals Suite of tools from Microsoft Technical Fellow Mark Russinovich, which gives even greater powers to isolate and terminate the offending process.
