can you power a computer without a cpu

yes i know that much. but do you know if it is ok to turn it on just to see if the fans work and stuff without the cpu in it? because i tried it and the fans ran and everything but i got a funny smell like something burning.

Sniff the power supply and see if you smell burned plastic... you prolly got a dead short somewhere.
