my server is @#$%ed. I built a new one, with the same software.

win2000 server
exchange 2000

I need to move over 3 mailboxes w contacts and calender. can I just backup the mailboxes through ntbackup (backing up the M:) then restore on the new server?

Are they in the SAME exchange ORG? You could just move the mailbox.

Alternativly try using Outllok instead of NTBACKUP (Which won't work by the way) Export the mailboxes to a PST and then import them into the new mailbox on the new server.

I would but my server is so bad I can not connect through outlook. I have the M: and that is it

According to to Microsoft you should be able to use NTBackup.exe . I would do an online backup if possible. You will need to backup IIS, Active Directory and Exchange. Run the backup and do a Full Backup. You will need to make sure you have the right permission in order to copy the files. If you search Microsoft you can find help articles on backing up and restoring Exchange.

if you can attach to exchange and the services are all running try using an exmerge - this will allow the administrator to export to a pst without having to open in outlook - you then create a new mailbox on the new server and exmerge the mail back in.

Hope this helps

Exmerge is indeed quite handy, and I highly recommend that everyone know about it. My personal policy is to always Exmerge a mailbox before moving it between Exchange srevers too, so that just in case there's a problem during the move I have some data to work off of. You wouldn't believe how often I've had data become corrupted during mailbox moves, especially between sites over slow WAN links.

Something to keep in mind though is that using Exmerge breaks the link between scheduled appointments on calendars. If you have to restore from a .PST then meetings scheduled on a user's calendar will not update other meeting attendee's calendars when changes are made. But it still beats being missing an entire mailbox worth of data.

sounds like this my work I am trying it now.

my issue is with permissions, what is the "exchange service account" or how do I give administrator access to all mailboxes
