Can you change the name on the tab accross the top of your sharepoint site on a subsite if you have already named it and have uploaded documents to it without having to create a new subsite?

Go to Site Actions > Site Settings > Modify all site settings. Under the look and feel section, there is a Title, Description and icon link. You should be able to do it there.

I have tried doing that. It doesn't change the name on the tabs accross the top. That is where i am stuck. I need to change that tab name and it won't go

Elizabetht

That's strange - those changes should be picked up automatically.
Try going to site actions > site settings > modify navigation. Here you can modify what displays in your Global Navigation and your current navigation.

Okay i am not finding modify naviagation. and i retried the first way you suggested and it didn't work. So i am stuck

Try site actions > site settings. once you get to that page, there should be a look and feel section with a navigation link under it.

okay i think my sharepoint is not correct. I don't have a navigation selection under the look and feel section.

Elizabetht

okay what do you do if you do not have that navigation link you told me about? do you know how i would get that on my sharepoint page?

Elizabetht

are you using MOSS 2007?
what options do you have available under site actions?

I have the following heading under site actions User and permissions, look and feel, galleries and site administration. I have the following information under the user and permissions heading: people and groups: advanced permissions. The following under look and feel: Title, description and icon; tree view; site theme; top link bar; quick launch; save site as template; reset to site definition. The following under Galleries: master pages; site content type; site columns; site templates; list templates; web parts. the following under site administration: regional settings; site libraries and list; site usage report; user alerts; RSS; search visibility; sites and workspaces; site features; delete this site; related link scope; settings.

Please help me

If you go into Title, Description, and icon, you should be able to change the name.

i tried that it doesn't change the name on the tab. What i don't understand is why i don't have the navigation thing on my sharepoint site

Elizabetht

it is a normal sharepoint site. I didn't create it one of the guys i work with did. I work with both main site and subsites. yeah i don't understand why that is not ther. Do i add anything into that url like the site name or something as i tried it the wab you put it and doesn't work

Elizabetht

where it says <mysite>, enter your site name. where it says <subsite>, enter the subsite. You can try omitting the subsite piece and see if that works.

i will defintely try that and hope it works

Elizabetht

okay url is not working. I enetered it into an ie search and it didn't work

Elizabetht

you should just enter it into the address bar. the _layouts/AreaNavigationSettings.aspx part is the key - just enter that after the url of your main site.

You're wanting to change the name of the tab across the top right? That's called the Top Link Bar. Go to Site Actions --> Site Settings like before. You have Top Link Bar under Look and Feel. Click that and it'll list all the "tabs" you have (if they aren't inherited from the parent, in which case you'll need to go to the parent site to edit). Click the icon next to the one you want to change. Change the description and click OK.
