Can you burn a CD from cmd prompt?

I need to create a bat file that will copy a file to the CD-RW and then burn it. The copy part works but I need the command to start the burn process. I looked at Microsoft.com and technet but we all know how fun it is to find something there...

I don't even know if the command exists.

It might be possible only if the file to be copied you mention was an ISO file? Alternatively if you didn't use XP's inbuilt burning software but had some third party CD burning software installed such as InCD (Nero)or similar?

You may have pointed me in the right direction. Need to look into it more. "free command line cd burning tools" is what I should have been searching for. Althought most of them I found so far are Linux.

If you already have the ISO image, you could use the cdburn utility from the 2003 resource kit (I use it all the time):

What about external hard drives or USB drives etc? Does it have to be CD? Will it fit on a floppy. A network share?
An e-mail attachment? How do you use an Command line to attach something to am E-mail? I don't know.

OK the full story is that I have a client (my only client because I don't do this anymore) that is not computer savy. In fact I have spent alot of time trainning him on the equipment he has (too much time). All I want is a bat file that will backup his 300mb QuickBook data onto a CD-RW. I don't want this guy to buy a backup software (STOMP or Nero Backit) for a 1 file backup (trust me, he has been screwed enough by local techs he hired). I tried to show them how to do a manual (if you can call XP's manual) burn but when their eyes started to glaze over I decided to give this a try.

Some of the free stuff Linney pointed me at should be able to do a one click backup to a cd instead of having to do a bat or a script.
