Am sorry but I am novice when it comes to photoshop...but can I do the following in a batch process..?

Add a black keyline along the edge of all the images...
Place this image on a square grey canvas...

All the images are going to be of the same size or orientation.

Have not made the decision -but most probably all the images would be a fixed distance (5-10 px) from the bottom edge of the canvas.

Appreciate your insight.

Yeah, that shouldn't be too hard.

The basic process will be:
-start recording your action
-convert background layer to normal layer (double-click and ok)
-add stroke using layer style (be sure to change the colour, width AND position>inside - this will give you square corners)
-increase canvas size (image > canvas size). Check the relative box (adds the amount you specify to the relevant edges of the canvas rather than resizing the canvas to the dimensions you enter) and then enter the amount of extra canvas you want - you said 5-10px. Also make sure that the image is anchored in the center
-create a new layer, drag it to the bottom of the layers palette so that it is underneath your initial layer. Choose a grey foreground colour and then fill the new layer.
-Stop recording your action

Remember, once you have recorded your action you can set it to prompt you at certain points, such as resizing the canvas, so you can specify different dimensions. To do this, in the actions palette click the second checkbox beside the relevant action.

good luck
