I've just recieved a Merlin Mail R3 and I'm trying to install it with a Merlin II, R3.
The problem I am having is when I try to access the Merlin Mail I get no prompts or greetings. The mail ports are answering the calls, but give no greetings. I can not use the admin. extension. When I dial 9997, the system hangs up on me after I dial 99. Further testing shows that when I call the merlin mail and it answers(I'm watching the ports answer on the merlin mail), and if I press the digit 1, the system says transfering call please hold, then transfers me to the operator successfully. If I call the merlin mail, it answers, and I press the digit 2, again it says transfering call. this time it trys to transfer me somewhere, I don't know where but it can't so it drops me. It does this alternating for all single digits dialed. When I call the VM and it answers and I dial *7, I get no prompts.(that transfer the call pompt is the only prompt I've heard with all my testing).and again the system will not let me use the admin. extension, it hangs up after dialing 99.
Can this Merlin Mail be saved or am I out of luck? Please ask me anything or give what advice you may have, I will respond. Thank You all for any help you may provide.

It sounds to me like it wasn't a "new" system and that it was already set-up. I saw some "old posts" that talked about issuing a "RESET" to the VM system to bring it back to orginal factory settings. I believe you need the Serial # of the system to do this.
Search this fourum for "Mail" "Reset".

Thank you for your response. You are right, this is a used system. I did see the post you are referring to. Those posts were for resetting the password and I was prepared for that, but my first real problem with that is the admin extension 9997 does not work, the system drops me after dialing just 99. so you can see where I can't get to the point where I use the serial number. With the info I posted above can someone tell me if this is a bad voicemail and need to replace it or can it be saved. Thank you.

I think yourMerlin Mail is setup for use on a Merlin Legend, not a Merlin II. I dont know how you can change it to Merlin II because you have to access 9997 to do that! I do know that the voice mail will work better if you upgrade to a Legend processor and that will probably also fix your accessing MB 9997 problem. The Legend processor is not that expensive anymore and you can reuse all your cards from the Merlin II.

thank you for your response. I'll give that some thought and maybe I can find a legend I can put it on temp. to test that. thank you.

I have a Merlin Legend and a used Marlin Mail v. R3 and I have the same problem that wanderingstar is saying.

I have tried also with the "old posts" that talked about issuing a "RESET" to the VM system to bring it back to orginal factory settings; done by serial port. What I could see thru a basic menu is that the four Merlin Mail ports are configured as auto-attendant but it does not give me the option to change that configuration.

Anybody can help us??

Thank you in advance!!

I had the same problem it cost me $150 to find the answer from AVAYA techsupport ..try this when goinginto the mail tye the 9997#
123456# then 9# then 1234567
the 9 is not announced as a choice in the sysadmin mail but if the system passwords havent been changed that should let you in to the voice mail and all the rest fo the setups for the system

To reset the Merlin Mail execute the following procedure. Using a laptop or other computer connect to COM1 on the Merlin Mail using Hyperterminal, direct connection. Reboot the Merlin Mail and execute a CTRL-BREAK to stop the initialization files from running. Type in User 1 and hit enter to initialize hard drive then type in INIT. The unit will then restart. Good Luck, Mr. Phelps

Whoops, I forgot to tell you that you need to use a null modem as well. This procedure resets the Merlin Mail to factory defaults.
