Can this be done? Merlin Legend to Channel Bank 2

We have a site that has a Merlin Legend and we need to extend eight single line extensions to a second site 2 miles away. both sites are on point to point fiber so T1s are no problem.

I was wondering if we could use a channel bank at the far end to provide analog stations and a 100D at the near end.

If so how would the programming be set up?

I dont know of any way to emulate stations on the DS1 board. Someone else may be able to help there. You could maybe channel bank each end and do it that way. I am not sure you can emulate stations thru the channel bank. I know you can do trunks. You could buy a Legend or Magix with DS1 and create a Point to Point with the fiber and some RAD modules. Just some ideas. Someone else may have better solution.

If all you want are analog T/R stations, then you would need a channel bank or equivalent at each end of the DS1, equipped as FXO/FXS channel units.

Unfortunately the Merlin Legend/Magix never had the software or hardware architecture to support any stations, analogue or digital on DS1, only lines/trunks. It would have been very simple to do analogue T/R stations but they never wrote any software for it.

I remember reading somewhere in this (i believe)forum that the legend was successfully tied in to an Asterisk box, I also remember seeing the configuration set for fxs on the DS1 in theory this should work on a channel bank as well. I may have to install a legend at the far end and network the two systems. Thanks for the replies.

Yes, you probably did read about that type of setup, but that only works with trunking, NOT stations. The Merlin Legend/Magix has a "station" side and a "line/trunk" side that comprise part of the switch fabric in its design.

The FXS option is what you get when the channels are set for Loop-start/Ground-start on the DS1 module, but that is still lines/trunks... When one of the channel options is selected, it sets up a specific signalling pattern for the ABCD bits in the T1 frame. Each channel has its own set of bits. So E/M has a specific pattern, Loop-start has a specific pattern, and Ground-start has a specific pattern.

You mention putting a Legend at the other location. If you don't have any documentation on the Legend, you can download it for free from: support.avaya.com , there is a manual that covers networking the Legend/Magix switches, plus others you want to download. Lots of good stuff. Also reading old posts in this forum on Networking should be helpful to you or anyone else interested.

So SYQUEST...is it you that's the Class 5 switch admin? It's been a number of years since I ran into a guy that tosses around terms like "switch fabric", and it felt kinda good. Smart guy, you.

BTW, I think SYQUEST was on to something. Getting a used Legend to fold into your existing PBX network would be a cheap solution to this problem. You'll spend nearly as much on channelbanks otherwise, and this way you can support multiline sets as well.

You may only need eight analog stations TODAY, but you know how that story goes.

If your LAN comes over the point to point fiber you can install an MCK gateway (12 or 24 port) at the Merlin Magix location and ship 44xx sets using the LAN to the other location. The remote location would need (1) MCK 4000 Extender(special for 44xx sets) for each 44xx set needed.
So at the remote location you have all the functionality of a regular 44xx set.

I have never "admin'd" a class 5 switch, but have a background in switching and very familiar with the trunking aspects of the 5ESS and DMS100 switches. I worked for a paging company in a previous time and handled all the Telco in California. (Lots of trunking and DID numbers!)

I like to be creative in some of my descriptions, since it helps get the point across and makes the reading more enjoyable.

MCK hardware, I forgot about that stuff. There have been posts in the past about this hardware and the Legend/Magix, but I have no experience with any of it. It is worth checking out though...

They work great and very easy to install. I have one portable (4412 set with a MCK 4000 Extender) set up with DHCP and can use it at any of our facilities within the USA on our INTRANET.
